Prometheus

Introduction

Cryptic Crossword Clue: The anti-Batman is crazy, tho supreme. (6)

Prometheus is the anti-Batman. His criminal parents gunned down by law enforcement, he vowed vengeance on all the forces of justice. And since the Justice League is a force of justice, he feels as if that’s a good a place as any to start.

Using his inherited fortune, he trains himself to be the peak (or near-peak) of humanity, in both mental and physical terms. It is unclear whether he is ever visited by a giant Greek mythological fire-stealing Titan of if he considers crime-fighters a ‘superstitious, cowardly lot’.

Prometheus is a delightful anti-Batman scamp in his first major appearance against the Justice League
Prometheus is a delightful anti-Batman scamp in his first major appearance against the Justice League

Prometheus first attacks the Justice League during Grant Morrison’s run on the team. He disguises himself as a competition winner in order to get himself up to the Justice League Watchtower on the moon, then starts attacking the bejeezus out of everybody with carefully constructed plans to defeat each and every member of the league.

It’s such a good idea that Batman decides to secretly do the same thing, eventually leading to the Tower of Babel storyline. Prometheus, meanwhile, would also refine his ideas, returning as part of Lex Luthor’s Injustice Gang closer to the end of the run.

Prometheus returns in the Cry for Justice mini-series, where he’s somehow even more unpleasant. He starts killing Global Guardians, which nobody really notices for a while, as you’d expect.

But eventually enough of them die that superheroes start paying attention, enabling Prometheus to sneak aboard the Justice League and implement his true scheme. Naturally, it involves teleportation, time travel, maiming, murder and, of course, talking gorillas.
