When Grant Morrison started writing the JLA, he needed a supervillain threat to bring his new version of the team together. Would he go with Darkseid? The Crime Syndicate of America? Starro The Conqueror? No, of course not. Why waste his energy on those threats so early in his run? No. Much better to make up a new foe. Enter… the Hyperclan.

The Hyperclan were ostensibly a bunch of dreamy alien superheroes who showed up on Earth and immediately started performing wondrous feats such as irrigating the Sahara, killing Metamorpho and installing Microsoft Windows XP Service Pack Two (this is 1997, remember?).

Naturally, these feats of wonder won over the fickle general public. Equally naturally, Bats didn’t buy a word of it. Bruce worked out the Hyperclan’s dread secret (hint: it had something to do with hair product) and the JLA eventually defeated the criminy out of them.

Good start, guys.
