Cryptic Crossword Clue: The alien race that brought the Justice League together, explains a pal dubiously (12)
While Starro was the first villain the Justice League confronted in the comic book issues in our world, within their own continuity, the foes that first brought the team together were the alien race of the Appellaxians. These seven obnoxious clowns decided to use Earth as a battleground to decide which of them would rule their home planet (Appellaxia, presumably).
Total dick move. Luckily, Superman, Batman, Wonder Woman, Green Lantern, Flash, Martian Manhunter and Aquaman were around to sort the Appellaxians out and send them on their way. They then decided to form a club called the Justice League of America.
And now you know the rest of the story.
Appellaxians in the Comics
Justice League of America – Issue 9
In the ninth issue of the comic, somebody thought to ask the Justice League members how they first got together. “It wasn’t really that starfish dude, was it?” asked Snapper Carr.
And no, it wasn’t. Instead, the Justice League reminisce about the Appellaxians and their mental idea to use Earth to fight it out and determine who should lead their own planet.
“They turned us into trees!” says Aquaman. “Can you believe that?”
